Abstract
In the production of alkali metal metal formates by the action of carbon monoxide at elevated temperature and pressure on a mixture of anhydrous alkali sulphates and alkaline earth metal hydroxide, with or without alkali hydroxide, a maximum of about two molecules of water per molecule of alkaline earth metal hydroxide is employed. From the solid product alkali formate may be recovered by lixiviation. In the example, 142 parts by weight of anhydrous sodium sulphate is mixed with 74 parts of calcium hydroxide, and treated with 60 parts of carbon monoxide and about 36 parts by weight of water for 60 to 90 minutes under a pressure of 10 to 12 atmospheres and at a temperature of 170 DEG C. The sodium formate is recovered from the dry reaction mass by lixiviation. A continuous process may be effected in rotary cylinders, the solid mixture of sodium sulphate and calcium hydroxide being charged in at one end and concentrated carbon monoxide at the other. The water may be introduced into the apparatus with the carbon monoxide, or independently, the product being removed continuously.
