Abstract
In carrying out chemical reactions in molten media, the bottom of the reaction vessel is maintained at a lower temperature than the main body of molten medium and is further protected from corrosion by a layer of solid material, which may be of the same composition as the molten medium. Suitable materials are alkali metal hydrides and phosphates, aluminium phosphates, phosphoric acid, and boric anhydrides. In externally heated apparatus the bottom of the vessel may project through the base of the furnace and may be provided with independent cooling and heating means. The invention is applicable to the production of acetic and other aliphatic anhydrides by decomposition of the acids, the production of aliphatic acids and esters by reaction between carbon monoxide and aliphatic alcohols, and the thermal decomposition or cracking of hydrocarbons.ALSO:In carrying out chemical reactions in molten media the bottom of the reaction vessel is maintained at a lower temperature than the main body of molten medium, and is further protected from corrosion by a layer of solid material which may be of the same composition as the molten medium.
