Abstract

273,103. Pease, E. L. July 7, 1926. Purifier waste, revivefying ; washing processes. -An aqueous suspension of calcium sulphate in presence of carbon dioxide which is employed in extracting ammonia from gases is regenerated by heating e.g. to 80-90‹ C. so as to liberate the ammonia. Coal gas is washed while still hot with hot tar and is passed e.g. at 50-60‹ C. in counter-current to the sulphate slurry which is then withdrawn and heated, preferably under reduced pressure. The liberation of ammonia. may be assisted by passing a current of air or other gas through the heated suspension. Residual ammonia is removed by treatment with an acid substance such as crude phosphoric acid or a solution of mono-ammonium or mono-potassium phosphate or a mixture preferably at a temperature precluding considerable condensation of water vapour. According to the Provisional Specification the order of treatment with phosphoric acid and the sulphate slurry is reversed. The gas is finally treated with cooling water.
