Abstract
171,684. Simonson, W. H., and Mantius, O. Nov. 19, 1920, [Convention date]. Acids, concentrating.-Sulphuric acid in concentrated form, is prepared from sludge acid obtained in refining petroleum, by diluting the sludge acid to cause separation of hydrocarbons &c. and concentrating the weak acid under reduced pressure in a retort heated by a steam coil. The acid, if not concentrated to 66‹ Be., is brought to this strength for use again, by addition of fuming sulphuric acid. The sludge acid from a tank A is led into a separating tank D in which it is diluted to 28-30‹ Be. by steam or hot water admitted by a perforated pipe E. After settling, the upper layer is withdrawn by a pipe I and the weak acid by a pipe K to a tank L from which it is pumped to an evaporator N heated by a coil R, through which exhaust steam, and afterwards steam at 80-100lb. per sq. in. or other heating medium is passed. The pressure in the evaporator is reduced by a jet condenser W, until the acid boils at 270-290‹ F. After concentration, the acid is passed through a filter T to separate carbonaceous matter.
