Abstract
269,908. Urbain Corporation. April 21, 1926, [Convention date]. Phosphoric acid.-Phosphorus or hydrogen compounds of phosphorus are treated to obtain a concentrated solution of phosphoric acid. The materials are burnt in a chamber 1 with air admitted through regulated openings. The products of combustion are passed up a Gaillard tower 2 down which phosphoric acid solution flows. The gases which enter the tower at a temperature about 900-1100‹ C. and escape at about 200-280‹ C., are passed through an immersed nest of tubes 5 in which they are cooled to 100-120‹ C. to avoid the condensation of steam, and into chambers 6 filled with coke in which combination of phosphorous pentoxide and water takes place. Water may be sprayed into the containers. A solution of phosphoric acid is obtained and is passed by a pipe 7 around the nest of tubes 5 where it undergoes a preliminary concentration and thence by a pump 3 down the tower 2 where it undergoes a final concentration.
