Abstract

An alkali metal borohydride is produced by reaction between boron trioxide and an alkali metal hydride or a mixture of an alkali metal and hydrogen under anhydrous conditions in the presence of an alkaline earth metal halide or silicon dioxide at above 100 DEG C. at a super-atmospheric hydrogen pressure; alternatively, a boron silicate glass prepared by fusing boron trioxide or other boron oxide with silicon dioxide may be used as starting material. The process is performed in an autoclave at between 350 DEG and 450 DEG C. and under a hydrogen pressure of 4-100 atmospheres. The examples specify sodium as the alkali metal. The sodium borohydride formed is extracted with liquid ammonia.
