Abstract

In preparing hydrogen peroxide (see Group III) by reacting a secondary alcohol in the liquid state with oxygen at 70 DEG C. to 160 DEG C., a ketone is obtained as a by-product. Thus isopropyl alcohol gives rise to hydrogen peroxide and acetone which may be hydrogenated in the presence of Raney nickel to regenerate isopropyl alcohol. Methyl ethyl ketone, methyl isobutyl ketone, and cyclohexanone are similarly prepared.ALSO:Hydrogen peroxide is prepared by the reaction between a secondary alcohol in the liquid state and oxygen or a gas containing free oxygen at between about 70 DEG C. and 160 DEG C. Many alcohols are specified, particularly isopropyl and secondary butyl alcohol, cyclic secondary alcohols and unsaturated alcohols. Unreactive substituents may be present in the alcohol, as in monoacetate of hexane 2, 5 diol, 1, 3 epoxy 2 propanol and ethers of glycerol and glycols. Super-atmospheric pressure may be used. A small amount of hydrogen peroxide or organic peroxy-compound or carboxylic acid may be added to promote the reaction, and water may be present. A vessel of aluminium, tin, glass treated with boric acid, or of resin, and having a large volume to surface ratio may be used. The process may be continuous.
