Abstract

A process for the production of a polymer of an alkenyl phenol of formula <FORM:0971754/C1/1> where R1 is alkyl or cycloalkyl and R2 and R3 are H or inert substituents, comprises reacting the unsaturated alcohol RC2H3O with a phenol of formula <FORM:0971754/C1/2> in the presence of an acid catalyst and at inner solvent that forms an azeotrope with water, and removing by-product water by azeotropic distillation. The preferred polymers contain between 2 and 30 alkenyl phenol units and may be converted to salts, e.g. Na, K and ethylamine salts. In examples polymers of isopropenyl phenol, 2-methyl-4-isopropenyl phenol and 2, 6-dimethyl-4-isopropenyl phenol are obtained by the reaction of allyl alcohol with phenol, o-cresol or o-xylenol using toluene as diluent and sulphuric acid as catalyst.ALSO:A process for the production of a polymer of an alkenylphenol of formula <FORM:0971754/C3/1> where R1 is alkyl or cycloalkyl and R2 and R3 are H or inert substituents, comprises reacting the unsaturated alcohol R1C2H3O with a phenol of formula <FORM:0971754/C3/2> in the presence of an acid catalyst and an inert solvent that forms an azeotrope with water, and removing by-product water by azeotropic distillation.
