Abstract

389,963. Extracting chromium. HERAEUS-VACUUMSCHMELZE AKT.- GES. and ROHN, W., 8, Dammstrasse, both in Hanau-on-Main, Germany. Feb. 11, 1932, No. 4120. Convention date, April 15, 1931. [Class 82 (i).] In a process for the production of chromium by the reduction of chromium oxide with circulating hydrogen, the reduction takes place at a temperature above 1600‹ C., the source of heat being disposed within the outer walls of the reaction chamber, and a lining of heatinsulating material between the walls and the source of heat. In one form of apparatus an element 3, Fig. 1, of molybdenum, or tungsten, &c., wound on an inner tube 4 and separated from an outer tube 1 by an insulator 2 heats the initial charge of molten chromium and superimposed oxide in a crucible 5, while hydrogen circulates through tubes 8, 9. Molten chromium 12, Fig. 2, heated inductively by a coil 27 may form the source of heat, the hydrogen then circulating through tubes 19, 26 ; or molybdenum heating elements 28, Fig. 3, may be disposed within the lining of heat insulating material 11. Water vapour is removed from the circulating hydrogen by cooling to temperatures of -60‹ C. to -70‹ C., produced by vaporizing mixtures of liquid carbon dioxide and acetone, or ether, &c., or by vaporizing ammonia under reduced pressure.
