Abstract
363,267. Making glass tubes and rods. COMPAGNIE DES LAMPES, 29, Rue de Lisbonne, Paris. April 21, 1931, No. 11796. Convention date, May 22, 1930. [Class 56.] Relates to the manufacture of tube or rod by allowing molten glass 1 to flow through an aperture 2 in the floor of a container, a mandrel 3 being provided to control the outflow.of glass. According to the invention, rotation is imparted to the tube as it is drawn by producing a difference of temperature on opposite sides of the tube as it issues from the aperture. This may be done by heating the tube externally on one side by a burner 4, or internally by means of a jet of hot gas injected through a passage 7 in the mandrel. The temperature difference can be obtained also by cooling the tube locally, or by arranging a shield near one side of the tube to prevent loss of heat by radiation.
