Abstract
630,184. Gas &c. heating furnaces. INDUSTRIKEMISKA AKTIEBOLAGET, and NAUCLER, J. O. Feb. 12, 1944, No. 2640. Convention date, Nov. 28, 1941. [Class 64(i)] In a gas or vapour heater in which the gas or vapour to be heated flows througt tubes, preferably vertical, arranged in a chamber through which a heating gas flows, the tubes are so distributed and the stream of heating gas is so restricted that the stream does not flow directly on the tubes but heats them substantially only by radiation from or through a gas depth (i.e., the distance between the tube wall and the remotest point of the radiation heat source) of 0.5 metre or more, preferably one metre or more. Every part of the tubes heated by radiation from the gas stream receives heat from all parts of the stream. In the form shown, gas to be heated flows downwardly through a ring of tubes 6 suspended from an annular header 10, and is heated by combustion gases flowing from a gas burner 2 to an outlet 9. The tubes are spaced so that the wall 7 of the chamber 20 is heated, and also heats the tubes, ,by radiation. The top of the furnace has a projection 17 which screens the junction of the tubes 6 and header 10 from direct radiation from the burner. The wall 7 may comprise an inner layer of refractory bricks surrounded by a layer of chamotte grains, a layer of stone wool, and an iron casing. It may have a low heat capacity, e.g., be made of a material of low specific heat, to cool rapidly if the heated and heating gases are cut off. The combustion gases discharged from the heater may be used to preheat the air or gas for combustion or the gas or vapour to be heated. The Specification as open to inspection under Sect. 91 describes an expansion device between the lower header 11 and gas outlet 15, comprising a pipe with its lower edge submerged in a liquid seal composed of molten lead, lead alloy, Babbit metal, &c.. located in an annular pocket. This subject-matter does not appear in the Specification as accepted.
