Abstract

<PICT:0434150/III/1> In the production of tin oxide by oxidation of pulverized molten metallic tin with hot air, the furnace chamber supplying the mixture of molten metallic tin and hot air to a combustion chamber and the combustion chamber itself are initially heated, say to 1000 DEG C., to start the process, whereafter the temperature in the p combustion chamber is maintained by the heat of combustion and a portion of this heat is recuperated to maintain the temperature in the furnace chamber. As shown in the Figure tin melted in a receptacle A in the furnace chamber is supplied by a pipe B to a pressure or feed reservoir D, and issues through a jet E. Hot air under pressure from a heater F is fed to a sheath G surrounding the jet, and the mixture of hot air and pulverized molten tin ignites in the combustion chamber J, from which the tin oxide is removed by a fan to settling chambers. Initial heating of the furnace chamber may be effected by a hearth H and that of the combustion chamber by an oil burner. Heat may be recuperated from the combustion chamber by providing air chambers in its walls into which cold air is sucked, the issuing heated air being passed to the furnace chamber and the hearth H being progressively cut out of action by an appropriate register. The Specification, as open to inspection under Sect. 91, is not limited to recuperation of heat from the combustion chamber for maintaining the temperature of the furnace chamber.
