FIRE-POLISHING APPARATUS.

To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, Cnannns A. Suzanna, a citizen of the United States, and resident of Jeannette, in the county of Vestmoreland and State of Pennsylvania, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Fire-Polish.
ing Apparatus; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description thereof.
My invention relates to apparatus for firepolishing glassware.
The object of my invention is to provide a simple and efficient apparatus of this character in which the object to be fire-polished is subjected to the heat uniformly throughout its entire surface without the employment of a direct blast as ordinarily heretofore employed for this purpose.
To these ends my invention comprises the novel features hereinafter set forth and claimed.

In the drawing, the numeral 2 designates a suitable base or foundation upon which the furnace 3 is erected, said furnace having the side walls 4, the end wall 5, and the top 6.
In the end wall 5 is the air inlet 7 which admits the air to support the combustion of the gas which is admitted by the supply pipe 8 controlled by the valve 9.
Erected within the furnace is the support 10 which with the back-wall 5 forms the flue 10 leading into the main chamber 11. An escape-flue 12 is provided for carrying off the waste products of combustion.
Formed in the support 10 is the groove 13, and overhanging said groove supported on the ledges 14 are the refractory-blocks 15 which form the slot 16.
Located within the groove 13 is the channel 17 which projects out beyond the sup port 10 and is supported at its outer end by the standard 17 A ware-carrier 18 is contained within the channel 17, said channel forming a guide for the longitudinal movement of said warecarrier as it is moved back and forth thereon. This ware-carrier comprises the gear-box 19 with the hollow-shaft 20 connected thereto, said hollow-shaft forming a bearing for the Specification of Letters Patent.

In order to protect the support 10 against the destructive action of the flame directed against it by the inwardly extending gas pipe 8, a brick or slab 30 of refractory material may be set up against said support, and said brick or slab may be renewed from time to time.
A shield 31 extends down at the front of the furnace to shield the operator from the intense heat of the furnace, and said shield just allows for the clearance of the wareholder 29 and the bowl 32 or other piece of ware carried thereby.
When my improved apparatus is in use the ware-support is withdrawn into the position indicated in dotted lines Fig. 1, and the piece of ware, such as the bowl 82 is placed upon the holder 29, whereupon the operator by grasping the outer end of the waresupport pushes it into the furnace, the gear-box 19 moving along the bottom of the channel 17 as a guide. When the ware-support has been advanced to the inner end of the chan nel 17 the ware carried by the ware-holder is in the path of the products of combustion coming up the flue 10 into the chamber 11. In order to subject all parts of the bowl to the same heat action, the holder 29 is rotated by turning the handle 22. When the firepolishing operation is completed the waresupport is withdrawn and the bowl removed, another one adjusted in position, and the operation repeated.
By my invention, I provide a very simple and efficient form of apparatus in which the bowl is uniformly fire-polished and the parts vulnerable to heat are so protected as to prevent disintegration. The article to be firepolished is not subjected to 'a direct blast but is only subjected to the natural fiow of the products of combustion in their travel to the flue 12.

2. In apparatus for fire polishing glass ware, the combination with a heating chamber, of a refractory support extending within the heating chamber, having a groove formed therein, a channel member in said groove, and a ware-support longitudinally movable in said channel member.
3. In apparatus for fire-polishing glassware, the combination with a heating chamber, of a refractory support extending therein, a groove formed in said support, a waresupport longitudinally movable in said groove, and projecting members projecting over said groove forming a slot.
4. In apparatus for fire-polishing glassware, the combination with a heating chamber, of a refractory support extending therein, a guide in said support, and a ware-supp'ort movable longitudinally in said guide comprising a closed gear-box, gear-mechanism in said box, a vertical shaft, a Wareholder carried by saidshaft, and a longitudinally extending'shaft for operating said gear-mechanism.
5. In apparatus for fire-polishing glassware, the combination with a heating chamber, of a refractory support extending therein having a guide, a ware-support longitudinally movable in said guide comprising a closed gear-box, gear-mechanism in said box, a vertical shaft, a ware-holder carried by said shaft, a hollow shaft connected to said gear-box, and an operating shaftextending through said hollow shaft for operating said gear mechanism.
