Abstract

<PICT:0380110/III/1> In the thermal decomposition of ammonia into nitrogen and hydrogen, the ammonia, preheated by the outgoing decomposition products, is decomposed by passage in two stages over a catalyst, an electric heater being provided between the stages to heat the partially decomposed gases. As the major part of the decomposition is effected in the first catalytic stage, no injurious action on the electric heating wire is experienced. As catalyst, magnetic oxide of iron containing small amounts of potash and alumina and reduced in hydrogen may be employed. In the apparatus shown, catalytic chambers 16, 17 are constituted by three concentric tubes 1, 2, 3, the first two being welded to a lower plate 4 and the third to an upper plate 5, spaces being left between the tubes 2, 3 and the plates 5, 4 respectively. The outermost tube 1 is also secured to the upper plate 5 and an electric heating wire 7 is wound round the innermost tube 3. Preheating of the ammonia to be decomposed is effected in a coiled preheater formed from concentric tubes 11, 12, ammonia, preferably in the liquid form, being supplied by a tube 21 to the space between the tubes 11, 12. The decomposition products are conveyed from the chamber 17 to the inner tube 12 by tubes 13, 14; a pyrometer may be inserted through a tube 23 into the chamber 17 where the temperature is maintained at about 550 DEG C. by a temperature regulator 20 of known kind inserted by the tube 13 into the inner chamber 17. The apparatus is contained in a casing 19 and surrounded by heat-insulating material and the tubes 1, 2 are made of stainless steel or monel metal. In operation, liquid ammonia supplied by the tube 21 is vaporized and preheated by the outgoing gases and is delivered to the base of the catalytic chamber 16 whence is passes over the electric heater 7 to the catalytic chamber 17 where the decomposition is completed, the gases being delivered to the inner tube 12 of the preheater by the tubes 13, 14.
