Abstract

<PICT:0371394/III/1> Mineral oils are purified by passing the vapour and steam through cyanized coke obtained as described in Specification 371,384 by passing air or ammonia through coke soaked with alkali. For example, oil vaporized by live steam, or oil vapour from a pipe 34 and steam from pipes 35, are passed into a tower 30 packed with cyanized coke and connected by a pipe 33 to a condenser and a suction pump or the like. Spent coke is withdrawn through a gas and air lock L and a chute 32, is washed with water to remove impurities and recover caustic alkali, and is then treated as described in Specification 371,384 and re-used. Fresh coke is passed into the tower through a hopper 31 and a gas lock L<1>.
