Abstract

<PICT:0694875/III/1> In the extraction of sulphur from masses containing it, particularly gas purifying masses, by treatment with sulphur solvents, particularly carbon disulphide, the residual solvent remaining in the mass is removed by the passage of superheated vapours of the solvent itself through the mass. In the Figure sulphur-containing masses are contained in an inner vessel c spaced from an outer double walled vessel b through which double walls heated steam may be passed. The upper part of the vessel c is provided with a coke filter e, sealing being effected by a coverplate g and water seal h. The solvent enters through pipe i and passes down between the heated inner wall a of vessel b and that of container c and thus heated, enters through the perforated plate f into the sulphur-containing mass. The sulphur laden solvent then passes to a distilling vessel k, the sulphur being deposited and the solvent vapour passing partly to the condenser l and partly to the extraction vessel through pipe p. When the mass is freed from sulphur, solvent is withdrawn from vessel c to a container n through pipe o. Solvent vapours from k are now passed in through pipe p and, superheated by the hot inner wall a, remove the remaining solvent in vessel c. The vapours are exhausted by a jet c of liquid solvent and return via a cooler u to the solvent storage vessel n. A final flushing with steam removes the solvent vapours. Several extraction vessels may be arranged in parallel or, preferably, in series.
