Abstract
851,655. Removing soot from gases. BATAAFSCHE PETROLEUM MAATSCHAPPIJ N.V., DE. Dec. 29, 1958 [Dec. 31, 1957], No. 41866/58. Drawings to Specification. Class 55 (2). In a process for removing soot from a hot soot-containing gas, e.g. a gas containing carbon monoxide and hydrogen produced by the partial combustion of hydrocarbons, water is sprayed into the hot gas cooling the gas to a temperature which is less than 40‹ C., preferably less than 10‹ C., below the dew point of the mixture of gas and water vapour thus produced and the resulting soot-in-water suspension and entrained water is removed from the gas, steam is then added to the washed gas and by further cooling any remaining soot particles are removed. The further cooling may be indirect or be by spraying the gas with water. If the gas is initially at a very high temperature it may be passed through a waste heat boiler to cool it to a temperature of e.g. 250‹ C. The process is preferably carried out at a pressure of at least 5 atm. and preferably between 10 and 30 atm. In an example hot gas leaves a gas generator at 1300‹ C. and is cooled in a waste heat boiler to 250‹ C. before being scrubbed with water at 30‹ C., the temperature of the gas being reduced to 140‹ C. Steam is added to the gas after it leaves the scrubber and the gas is cooled indirectly to 20‹ C.. The final gas contained 1 grain of soot per 1000 kilogrammes of dry gas. Specification 826,209 is referred to.
