Abstract

<PICT:0933071/III/1> Non-combustible gases are produced by burning a liquid hydrocarbon fuel in a sufficient amount of air to yield combustion products consisting of a mixture of carbon dioxide, carbon monoxide and nitrogen and a small quantity, e.g. 2%, of residual oxygen, passing the combustion products through a reaction chamber fed with sufficient liquid hydrocarbon fuel to combine with the residual oxygen to produce carbon monoxide and carbon dioxide and containing copper oxide in amount sufficient to oxidize the carbon monoxide and discharging the gases from the reaction chamber. A liquid hydrocarbon fuel is supplied to a combustion chamber a by pump b, through regulator o, where it is burnt with sufficient air from pump c and regulator p, the temperature of the combustion being controlled by cooling coils d fed with cooling water from pump e. Combustion products pass through cooler f to reaction chamber g containing copper oxide and to which a small quantity of the hydrocarbon fuel is pumped by pump b through regulator o for combustion with residual oxygen. Product gases leaving chamber g pass in succession through cooler f1, drier h, cooler f2 and drier h1 and are discharged through n. CO2 gases may be removed by use of a suitable washer m.
