Abstract

A gas mixture containing N2, CO2, H2O which is incapable of burning or supporting combustion is produced by operating an internal-combustion engine to produce exhaust gases containing in themselves sufficient free O2 to support combustion of a hydrocarbon fuel, mixing the exhaust gases with just sufficient hydrocarbon fuel to combine with all the free O2 therein, and igniting and burning the mixture in a secondary combustion chamber. The internal-combustion engine may be a diesel engine, a free piston engine or a gas turbine. As shown in Fig. 1, exhaust gases from a diesel engine PM containing sufficient free oxygen to support the secondary combustion are passed via tube 25 into tube 26 where it is sprayed with diesel fuel from nozzle 33, and the mixture is ignited in turbulence chamber 28 by ignition plug 34. The diesel fuel flow is regulated by needle valve 31 so that all free oxygen is consumed and no excess hydrocarbon remains in the final product. Damper 47 may be used to control the flow of diesel engine exhaust gases. The ignited mixture passes through combustion tube 27 which is separated from tube 26 by inclined and straight vanes 50, 51 which mix the ignited mixture. The mixture passes out at duct 48 where it is sprayed with water from jets 55 which water bubbles the formed inert gases through outlets 52 in header 49. The gases bubble up through the water pool, pass through water sprays from nozzle 61, through baffle filter 68 and emerge at outlet 72. <PICT:1049876/C1/1>
