Abstract

An incombustible gaseous mixture is produced by partially combusting a hydrocarbon with air in a primary combustion chamber to produce a first gaseous effluent, introducing air into said effluent and continuing the combustion in a secondary combustion chamber to produce a second gaseous effluent therefrom. The second effluent is analyzed and the quantity of air introduced into the first effluent controlled so as to maintain the composition of the second effluent constant. The fuel may be completely combusted in the second chamber. The rate of flow of air into the primary chamber may be controlled so as to maintain the temperature in the primary chamber constant. The combustion in the primary chamber may be controlled so as to produce a gas consisting of N2, H2, CO and CH4. The second effluent can be cooled and purified to produce a suitable protective atmosphere for heat treating metals (e.g. 85% N2, 13% CO2, 1% CO, 1% H2).
