Abstract

NOx gases are reduced by (a) burning fuel and stoichiometric air (support gas) in a first refractory chamber (b) introducing NOx gases (c) introducing mixt. of hydrocarbon gas and steam to form reducing atmos. (d) passing gas effluent at 2000 degrees F to a second refractory chamber (e) rapidly cooling the effluent to 1250 degrees-2000 degrees F and (f) adding air to second chamber to burn excess combustibles. Pref. gases such as H2, Co and/or CH4 may be supplied direct to provide the reducing atmos. Since reducing atmos. is not provided by burner operation, close control of fuel burning is not required.
