Abstract

<PICT:0786730/III/1> Carbon black is produced by injecting a vaporized make hydrocarbon oil from a plurality of orifices 41 and air for partial combustion of said oil from annular passage 42 into a furnace heated at the inlet to a temperature of 2500-3000 DEG F. by the combustion of a mixture of a liquid or gaseous hydrocarbon, preferably natural gas, and air, preferably in stoichiometric proportions, passed in horizontal flow from an annular passage 45. The furnace temperature increases to e.g. 3100 DEG F. by the partial combustion of the vaporized oil. The air for the partial combustion may constitute 6 per cent of the total air supplied. The oil may be an aromatic type distillate oil of 17-19 degrees AP1 gravity and may be vaporized by heating to 750 DEG F. The oil feed rate may be 35-50 gallons per hour. The total air supplied may be 1000-1150 cubic feet per gallon of oil. The air-hydrocarbon fuel ratio may be 11-15.5 to 1 using gas of 1070 B.T.U. The injector device is described in Specification 786,729.
