421,540. Metal-heating furnaces. BIRMINGHAM ELECTRIC FURNACES, Ltd., and LOBLEY, A. G., Tyburn Road, Erdington, Birmingham. May 19, 1933, Nos. 14504/33 and 13329 /34. [Class 51 (ii)] Gases, supplying. -In a metal-heating furnace, a gas produced by the combustion of a mixture of air and hydrocarbon under such conditions that the combustion products return on themselves to the region of the mixture intake before leaving the combustion chamber, is used as a protective or work-enveloping atmosphere. In the apparatus shown, a fuel-air mixture is delivered tangentially into the cylindrical combustion chamber d through the nozzle e, and the products, after swirling round the chamber, pass through the axial opening h to a superposed chamber i containing catalytic material, and are delivered to the metal-heating furnace through the outlet j. Butane, towns' gas, or vapourized liquid fuel may be used as the combustible, and the catalytic filling may consist of firebrick, firebrick treated with a nickel or other salt, or metallic nickel.
