Abstract

503,480. Powdered fuel. JOHNSON, G. W. (I. G. Farbenindustrie Akt. Ges.) Oct. 4, 1937, Nos. 26804/37, 30139/37, and 4969/38. [Class 50] The softening point of coal extracts, intended for use as a powdered fuel in internalcombustion engines, is raised by treatment in counter-current with hot combustion gases containing free oxygen and below the ignition point of the extract. The temperature may lie between 100-600‹ C., and the reaction chamber may consist of rotary tubes, or towers up which the material is whirled by the gas. An additional treatment with nitric acid or nitrous gases, as described in Specification 485,461, may be adopted; or the fuel after treatment with combustion gases may be mixed with fuel treated with nitric acid &c. A small amount of liquid fuel may be added to the treated extracts. Specification 603,480 also is referred to.
