Abstract

482,639. Vaporizers for internalcombustion engines. SOC. INDUSTRIELLE HELLENIQUE DES GAZOFACTEURS BERHOUDAR SOC. ANON. April 14, 1937, No. 10638. Convention date, July 25, 1936. [Class 7 (iii)] [Also in Group XII] In the production of oil gas for internalcombustion engines by cracking heavy hydrocarbons in a vessel surrounded by a heating chamber, the combustion products from the latter are exhausted by means of a reduced pressure which is the more reduced as the engine speed is increased. This control of the draught may be effected by discharging the gases into the engine exhaust pipe or into a pipe connected to a suction pump which is driven by the engine. In the former embodiment of the invention, the motive gases are fed to the suction pipe 50, Fig. 4, of the engine from a cracking vessel A, Fig. 1, through a withdrawal pipe 20, the gases from the heating chamber B being fed to the exhaust pipe 22 through a pipe 21 provided with a Venturi tube 23. The cracking vessel A comprises a closed tube 10 with an open-ended multi-walled tube 11 arranged concentrically therein and heavy hydrocarbon is fed to the surfaces of the latter by a Venturi tube 6 connected to a controlled oil reservoir 2. The vessel may be constructed of a catalytic material, such as nickel. The heating chamber B, which is lined for the most part by refractory material 8, is charged with charcoal and is provided with a liquid fuel feeding device consisting of a constant level petrol or oil reservoir 14, igniter 12 and an injector tube 17. In operation, the engine is started by the ordinary carburetter and the charcoal is then ignited by a petrol flame from the injector tube 17. Heavy hydrocarbon, identical with that fed to the cracking vessel, is then supplied from the reservoir 14 to the incandescent charcoal to maintain the heating. Additional air cocks 9 may be provided to ensure complete combustion. A cock 5 on the cracking vessel allows air, steam or drops of water to be admitted for combustion of the cracking residues. After passage through a tar filter and a device for mixing with air, the combustible mixture flows through a condensing filter consisting of an eccentrically arranged inlet pipe 40, Fig. 4, and an inverted cone 42 to separate condensate, followed by a filter 43 of metal gauze.
