Vaporizers, external. -Engines are supplied with a mixture of air charged with heavy oil, and steam partly dissociated by contact with heated carbon which acts as a catalyst and produces carbon monoxide, carbon dioxide, free hydrogen and other gases in the nascent state. Air entering at i, Fig. 1, and controlled by a screwed plug j, is charged with heavy fuel through a sprayer f and the mixture, after being heated in a sinuous passage in an exhaust-heated chamber a, is mixed on its way to the outlet h with steam and gases or vapours issuing through a conduit m and generated by the action of water on a highly heated carbonaceous mass in a chamber b. The air inlet and sprayer may be arranged to deliver at t. The water is delivered to the lower portion of the chamber b through a sprayer. The outlet h delivers to a T-shaped branch c, Fig. 9, which communicates respectively with the engine and with a petrol carburettor for starting. A throttle valve s may be connected to a throttle in the petrol carburettor. The petrol or heavy-fuel carburettor may be cut-off by a cock on the respective fuel supply pipe and air only drawn through to serve as a secondary air supply. The hot carbonaceous material acting as a catalyst brings the steam to a state which enables it to combine with the hydrocarbon vapours.
