Condensation of moisture, preventing; naphthalene, preventing deposits of.-In the recovery of ammonia from coal or like gas and after treatment with sulphuric acid, the condensation of objectionable effluent and the deposition of naphthalene are avoided by maintaining the temperature of the gases above the dew-point either of water or naphthalene until they are burnt or treated with a naphthalene solvent. In the case of coke-oven gas which is used for heating the ovens, the moisture retained in the gas before combustion prevents the deposition of carbon in the flues. In the case of coal gas, the vapour of a naphthalene solvent is mixed with the gas before cooling below 40-50‹ C., and the subsequent condensate is returned to the still or vaporizer for the production of marketable naphthalene.
