Separating gaseous mixtures by liquefaction.-In the separation of hydrogen from gaseous mixtures, such as coke oven or illuminating gas, by partial liquefaction, the liquid which contains nitrogen produced in the process is subjected in an auxiliary column to a progressive rectification or vaporization under the pressure of the liquefaction, the gas rich in nitrogen thus produced being returned to the place where the liquid is produced, and the residual liquid substantially free from nitrogen being evaporated to effect the partial liquefaction. The liquefaction column is provided with an upper nest of tubes B for the final liquefaction, and an auxiliary rectification column C is in open communication with the collector D at the bottom of this nest of tubes. The cooled compressed gas to be treated is delivered by a pipe G partly to the lower nest of tubes H in the main column and partly to the vaporizer V at the base of the column C. The liquid from the vaporizer is passed through the pipe E to the compartment I surrounding the tubes B. The liquid produced in the nest of tubes in the vaporizer V is passed through the pipe L to mix with the liquid in the main column. The unliquefied gases in these tubes are passed through a pipe Z into the collector D. The compressed gas may be admitted to the main column at a lower pressure than to the auxiliary column, by manipulation of the valve X. Specification 174,327 is referred to.
