Abstract
175,605. Soc. L'Air Liquide, Soc. Anon. pour l'Etude et l'Exploitation des ProcÚdÚs G. Claude. Feb. 17, 1921, [Convention date]. Separating gaseous mixtures by liquefaction.- In the separation of hydrogen from gaseous mixtures such coke-oven or coal gas by liquefaction, the final cooling which effects the purification of the hydrogen being effected by the expansion of hydrogen with external work, the fraction of the compressed gases which feeds the liquefier in which the hydrogen is warmed before expansion is withdrawn from the heat exchanger at a distance from the cold end. In the apparatus shown, the compressed gas enters a heat-exchanger E through a pipe H and passes through its outer portion; a part is drawn off at the point A and led through a liquefier L from which it passes to the base D of a separating column M, to which also the remainder of the gas from the exchanger is led through a pipe controlled by a valve V. The extent of opening of this valve is controlled, for example by thermo-electric couples, so that the hydrogen which circulates around the liquefier is sufficiently ,heated. The more volatile constituents rise through the tubes F of the separator, and are led through the outer portion of the liquefier and through an expander N to the outer portion of the separator column, the liquid formed being collected in separate fractions in the separator and the gases, hydrogen and carbon monoxide for example, being led into separate zones of the exchanger at the points B, C. The apparatus may be filled by passing the gas through a valve- V<1> into the expander N, the liquid formed being passed through the top of the separator and through a valve V" to the base of the separator column. A proportion of cold dry nitrogen may be added to the hydrogen before its expansion,. to increase the cooling effect and serve for lubrication. Specifications 136,837 and 174,327 are referred to.
