414,918. Separating gases by liquefaction. AIR REDUCTION CO., Inc., 60, East 42nd Street, New York, U.S.A.- (Assignees of Nuys, C. C. Van ; Cranford, New Jersey, U.S.A.) Oct. 3, 1933, No. 27226. Convention date, Oct. 27, 1932. [Class 8 (ii).] In the separation and recovery of ethylene from gas mixtures, the mixture, after cooling in an exchanger 8 by the separated outflowing products, passes into the lower part of a column 5 wherein it is partly liquefied, the liquid collecting in the bottom and the vapour rising through tubes 14 wherein further condensation of less volatile constituents occurs and passing off by a pipe 16 to the second column 6. The liquid containing ethylene passes to a separator 43 wherein some vaporization occurs, the residual liquid being delivered through a valved pipe 50 to the upper rectifying portion of column 5 while the vapour is led in part through a valved pipe 45 to a condenser 48 in this rectifier and in part through a pipe 44 to the corresponding rectifying portion of column 6. The vapour entering at the lower part of column 6 is partly liquefied with " backward return " in pipes 18 ; the vaporous porton flows through pipe 20, exchanger 27 and condenser 29 to a valved pipe 34 delivering it as liquid to the top of the second rectifier. The liquid portion flows through an exchanger 22 and a valved pipe to the bottom of the rectifier. Ethylene liquid freed from more volatile constituents collects around the base of the pipes 18, and the more volatile gases flow off at the top of the column where after cooling the exchangers 31, 27, 22 they pass off through exchanger 8. The liquid ethylene or its vapour is drawn off by a pipe 52 or 54 and delivered after expansion to the first rectifier, from the top of which ethylene flows off as gas through pipe 57. A portion of this gas may be recompressed in a compressor 62, cooled in exchanger 60 and delivered to condenser 48.
