Abstract
265,989. I. G. Farbenindustrie Akt.- Ges. Feb. 11, 1926, [Convention date]. Right to Patent relinquished. Oil gas.-Hydrocarbons, or gaseous mixtures containing them, are decomposed into hydrogen and carbon monoxide by means of water vapour, with the addition of air or oxygen if necessary, and the highly heated gases thus obtained are cooled by water either directly or indirectly, thereby condensing the water vapour in the gases and heating the cold water which is then brought into direct contact with fresh gases containing hydrocarbons to be subjected to the reaction. The resulting gas mixture thus charged with water vapour is introduced into the decomposition chamber after receiving, if necessary, a further addition of water vapour. If pure hydrogen is to be produced, the gases from the decomposition chamber, after an addition of further quantities of steam or water, if necessary, are passed over a catalyst, such as an activated iron-chromium compound, to convert the carbon monoxide and water vapour into hydrogen and carbon dioxide, the latter and any residual carbon monoxide being eliminated. The hot gases issuing from the apparatus in which the carbon monoxide is converted may also be used for the production of hot water which is applied to humidifying fresh gases containing hydrocarbons.
