Abstract

<PICT:0458692/III/1> In making hydrogen by reacting hydrocarbonaceous gases or vapours with steam in a periodically-operated chamber having a heat accumulating insertion, e.g. a Cowper apparatus, the hot carbon-black-containing reaction gases, after leaving the insertion, are passed through a flame produced by means of oxygen or air enriched with oxygen, the flame being such that it permeates the whole cross-section of the passage through which the gases flow. The carbon black is thus completely gasefied. The flame is made by injecting thin streams of oxygen into a restriction c between two Cowpers a, b. The insertion may also be a catalyst such as iron oxide, magnesium oxide, or lignite small coke.
