Abstract

A mixture of hydrogen and monoxide, for use, for example, in the production of methanol or for reaction with steam to produce hydrogen, is obtained by oxidizing methane, natural gas, or other gaseous hydrocarbons by means of metal oxides which are easily reducible under the conditions of the reaction, for example, oxides of iron, chromium, copper, nickel, manganese or zinc; zinc oxide is preferred as being less liable to produce carbon dioxide and water. Molecular proportions corresponding to the reaction CH4+ZnO = 2H2 + Zn are preferably employed, the temperature being 950-1000 DEG C. In operation, the gas, preheated if desired, may be passed over the heated oxide, or the gas and the oxide may be injected into the heated reaction chamber. By condensing and oxidizing the zinc produced, the operation may be rendered cyclic. Two examples are given of the treatment with zinc oxide of a natural gas containing methane together with some ethane and propane at temperatures of 952 DEG C. and 992 DEG C.ALSO:A mixture of hydrogen and carbon monoxide, for use, for example, in the production of methanol, is obtained by oxidizing methane, natural gas, or other gaseous hydrocarbons by means of metal oxides which are easily reducible under the conditions of the reaction, for example, oxides of iron, chromium, copper, nickel, manganese or zinc; zinc oxide is preferred as being less liable to produce carbon dioxide and water.
