Abstract

<PICT:0916945/III/1> Ammonia is recovered from coke oven liquor and other strong ammoniacal liquors by diluting the liquor so that it contains about 7 to 12% ammonia and heating the diluted liquor under a pressure of 5 to 15 atm., in deacidifier 1, to remove all the hydrogen sulphide and some of the carbon dioxide; the liquor is then stripped, in column 9, of ammonia and residual CO2, and finally this vapour mixture is passed up scrubber 13 wherein it is washed with liquor-to-be-treated which dissolves out the CO2 so that gaseous ammonia, containing only a little water vapour, is obtained at the top of the scrubber. The liquor is supplied to the plant via pipe-line 16; and part or all of it may pass through scrubber 13. The liquor is preferably diluted with part of the hot waste water withdrawn from the base of column 9. The diluted liquor is pumped, through conduits 2 and 3, into the side of deacidifier 1; and cold water is introduced into the top through p conduit 4. The deacidifier is heated by steam passing through coils 7. The steam leaving coils 7 may be utilized to strip the liquor in column 9.
