Abstract

<PICT:0898679/IV (b)/1> Phenols are extracted from neutral oils in a column I, and crude phenols are freed from neutral oils in column II, each column being maintained under superatmospheric pressure and being heated at the base, and both columns being supplied, via pipes 27 and 28, with alkali carbonate solution, the temperature and pressure conditions in the columns being chosen (e.g. 180 DEG C. and 10 atmospheres) so that the alkali carbonate dissociates into carbon dioxide and alkali hydroxide, and the neutral oils are vaporized. The distillate from column II is introduced through pipe 35 into the neutral oil which is being fed through pipe 3 into column I; p and the solution of alkali phenolate withdrawn from the base of column I is treated with CO2, obtained from the head of the column, whereby the phenols are liberated, and these phenols are introduced through pipe 36 into the crude phenols being fed through pipe 6 into column II. Vapours of dephenolated oil and steam are withdrawn from the head of column I through pipe 10. The lye withdrawn from the base of column II is treated with CO2, obtained from the head of the column, in order to liberate the purified phenols. The alkali carbonate which is re-formed in vessels 22 and 23 is conveyed through pipes 24 and 25 to container 26, from which it is pumped back into the columns. Specification 815,754 is referred to.
