Abstract
Ammonia is added to a system comprising a shift converter and a cooler for the effluent from the converter, to prevent corrosion in equipment contacted by steam condensate from the cooler. The converter may deal with gases produced by reacting hydrocarbons, e.g. natural gas, with steam and/or oxygen catalytically or non-catalytically. The ammonia, which may be added as an aqueous solution or as the compound, may be introduced at any point after the cooler, part at least of the condensate, which contains ammonia in amounts of 10 p.p.m., being recycled by a pump to the steam supply to the shift reaction via a direct cooler for the make gas, after separation of uncondensed portions of the effluent in a drum for subsequent treatment. The pH of the condensate is thus raised up to as much as 8.5, preferably 7.0 to 7.5. The cooler following the shift converter may be direct (by condensate) or indirect.ALSO:Ammonia is added to a hydrogen producing system comprising a shift converter and a cooler for the effluent from the converter, to prevent corrosion in equipment contacted by steam condensate from the cooler. The converter may deal with gases produced by reacting hydrocarbons, e.g. natural gas, with steam and/or oxygen catalytically or non-catalytically. The ammonia may be added as an aqueous solution or as the compound, and is introduced at any point after the cooler. Part at least of the condensate, which contains ammonia in amounts of 10 p.p.m., is recycled by a pump to the steam supply to the shift reaction via a direct cooler for the make gas, after separation of uncondensed portions of the effluent in a drum for subsequent treatment, e.g. removal of CO2.
