Abstract
Solid materials containing iron are freed therefrom by converting the iron to a salt if necessary and extracting the salt with an organic solvent, which may be an ether, aldehyde, ketone, or organic halogen compound. The extraction is preferably effected in the absence of water, but a material containing water of crystallization may be treated or small amounts of water be present in the solvent. In examples, heavy spar is extracted with ether, methanol, acetone, or chloroform saturated with hydrochloric acid gas; bauxite is extracted with ether, methylene chloride, trichlorethylene, or ethyene chloride in the presence of hydrochloric acid gas; producer slag containing iron and aluminium is decomposed with hydrochloric acid, and the dried mass extracted with ether, acetone, paraldehyde, or chloroform, optionally in the presence of hydrochloric acid; producer slag containing iron and aluminium is decomposed with sulphuric acid and the dried mass extracted with acetone in the presence of hydrochloric acid; and a mixture of nickel or cobalt chloride with ferric chloride is extracted with ether which may contain hydrochloric acid.
