282,367. Barrett Co., (Assignees of Brandon, G. E.). Dec. 14, 1926, [Convention date]. Ascension pipes and dip-pipes.-Tar is sprayed into coal gas directly after leaving the retort. The uptake pipe 3 of a retort 1 is enlarged to provide a space round the ascension pipe 7 and is provided with a spray-nozzle 9 through which tar is injected. A baffle 8 deflects the pitch and unevaporated tar into the space formed between the pipes 6, 7 from which they are removed by a pipe 18. Spray nozzles 20, 21 for the introduction of ammonia are provided in the collector main 5 and the goose neck connection 4. In a modification, the baffle 8 is attached to an inspection door so as to be removable therewith. The spray nozzle 9 is preferably formed with helical passages so that the tar is discharged with a whirling motion. In a battery of retorts only some of the uptake pipes are formed with the spraying apparatus. Specifications 16355/09, 6899/10, and 16891/15 are referred to.
