Abstract

312,759. Hummel, C. April 16, 1928. Case-hardening.-In a process for case-hardening iron, a liquid cementing agent such as tar oil is atomized and injected into a retort by means of gas under pressure, e.g. nitrogen or ammonia, which acts as catalyst or an accelerator in the process, the cementing agent being vaporized within the retort. Oil from a container a flows through a pipe b to the nozzle c of an atomizer d into the space e between the nozzle c and an atomizing nozzle f where it meets a stream of gas under pressure issuing from a pipe g connected to gas cylinders h. The oil is atomized by the nozzle f and projected through a pipe i into the retort k containing the articles to be hardened. A pressure equalizing pipe n may be provided between the upper part of the container a and the space between the pipe i and a pipe l or between the pipe g and the container a. The pipe n may branch off from the pipe l a short distance in front of the nozzle f.
