Abstract

193,979. Freeman, N. H. Dec. 5, 1921. Mineral and tar oils, purifying.-Oil is desulphurized by atomizing in a desulphurizing medium. Preferably the temperature is kept at 60‹ F. or less, the pressure in the reaction chamber is as near atmospheric as possible, and water is present. The desulphurizing agent may be a gas such as ammonia, hydrogen, or a mixture, a vapour, a liquid such as ammonium hydrate, or a powder such as an oxide that is fed continuously through the atomized oil. Using the apparatus shown, the cylindrical chamber 5 is filled with hydrogen and ammonia from valved inlet pipes 8, and oil and water are admitted through atomizing nozzles 15. The liquids run off into a settling tank 7, the valves 6, 10, and 14 being so adjusted as to maintain a liquid level 21-21.
