Abstract

161,253. Paris, A. J. Jan. 2, 1920. Mineral and tar oils, purifying.-Petroleum and analogous distillates are purified by compressing their vapour, mist, or spray with glycerine, turkey-red oil, castor oil, mineral lubricating-oil or other liquid purifying-agent having no chemical action, in presence of a non-oxygen carrier gas such as hydrogen, nitrogen, coal gas, or natural gas. In the apparatus shown, the compression cylinder A is charged with glycerine from the container B through a tube g and heater or cooler C, with distillate from a reservoir A<1> through pipes b and a or c, and with gas from a main f, heater or cooler F, and pipe c. After compression at 25 to 350 lb. per sq. in., the mixture passes by the pipes h, i through the container B where the glycerine is trapped out by that stored there, and the mixed gas and distillate pass to one or more condensers C', E, the gas passing by the pipe p and pressure-regulating valve p<1> out of the apparatus through a valve p<x> or through a pipe p to the main f for re-use. The mixture of gas and distillate may be obtained by passing the gas through crude oil in a vessel A<2>, or by spraying crude oil and gas together in any suitable apparatus; or the mixture of purifier, distillate and gas may be obtained before admission to the compression cylinder.
