Abstract
A process for making a gas containing gaseous hydrocarbons by hydrogenating a hydrocarbon oil comprises preheating the oil e.g. to 300 to 400 C., in the liquid phase and atomizing the oil into a gas recycle hydrogenator where the oil reacts under pressure with, and is entrained into circulation with, a supply of hydrogenating gas. The process is intended for non- distillate oils, e.g. crude petroleum, but distillate oils may be used, in which case the atomizer may be replaced by a pipe or jet. Atomization may be by the hydrogenating gas, which may be pre-heated, using conventional atomizing apparatus, and all the hydrogenating gas may be supplied in this way, although some may be delivered through an outer tube coaxial with the atomizer, and a small proportion may be introduced into the oil before pre-heating. Air may be added to the reactants to provide heat, and steam to mitigate carbon deposition. Operating temperatures in the range 650 to 850 C., and pressures in the range 5 to 100 atmospheres are mentioned.
