Abstract
1,173,048. Making hydrogen-containing gas. UNION CARBIDE CORP. 23 May, 1967 [24 May, 1966], No. 23790/67. Heading C5E. Hydrogen-rich gas, e.g. for fuel cells, is made from liquid or gaseous hydrocarbon in an apparatus comprising a cracking chamber 6 externally heated by a burner 4, and conduits 10, 12, 30 respectively for delivering fuel to the burner 4, feedstock to the chamber 6 and for leading gases out of the chamber 6. The fuel and the feedstock may be from a common supply, and one or both may be preheated by the combustion gases. The chamber 6 contains a cylindrical baffle 16 and a steel wool filter 28, and delivery of feed to the chamber 6 may be automatically controlled by a valve in the conduit 12 responsive to pressure in the conduit 30. The chamber 6 may comprise a removable unit in a shell 2. Hydrocarbon supply to the chamber 6 and to the burner 4 may be by pump, or the supply may be under pressure, and some unconsumed product gas may be recycled to the burner 4. Preferred operating temperatures are about 1100‹ C., the product gas consisting mainly of H 2 and CH4.
