Abstract

1,137,930. Making combustible gas. WOODALL-DUCKHAM Ltd. 31 Oct., 1967 [4 Nov., 1966], No. 49620/66. Heading C5E. Combustible gas is made by reacting one or more hydrocarbons, e.g. natural gas, with steam and oxygen over two catalysts 17, 18 in series, the catalyst 17 being an oxidation catalyst comprising nickel and platinum, and the catalyst 18 a nickel steam-reforming catalyst, and the reactants being preheated to a temperature in the range 250‹ to 600‹ C. Steam and oxygen are preheated in an annular chamber 11 surrounding a burner 7 supplied with natural gas, before being mixed in a Venturi mixer 14 with the rest of the natural gas supplied at 16. The space above the catalyst is minimized to limit flame formation there. Both catalysts are on refractory supports. The hydrocarbon is desulphurized at (2) and the product gas, after traversing a boiler 22, is enriched at 25 with natural gas or 1.p.g.
