Abstract
1282518 Carbon black CONTINENTAL CARBON CO 7 Nov 1969 [15 Nov 1968] 54720/69 Heading C1A An apparatus for the production of oil furnace carbon black by the thermal decomposition of hydrocarbons comprises an elongated cylindrical housing 10 having a first and second section 20 and 48 at the downstream and upstream ends of said reactor coaxially aligned in horizontal communication; a refractory lining 24 having a uniform inner diameter enclosed within the first housing section 20; a tangential port 30 extending through first housing section 20 and lining 24 at each of at least one point between the ends of the first housing section 20; a tunnel burner means 32 communicating with tangential port 30; an air input port 52 extending through the second housing section 48, including a conduit 54 communicating with port 52; a centrally apertured end plate 58 enclosing said second housing section 48; a cylindrical baffle 72 coaxially mounted within second housing section 48 having a diameter equal to the interior diameter of first section lining 24 and extending from the downstream end of second section 48 into spaced relation with end plate 58 establishing an annular zone 76 between second section 48 and baffle 72; a centrally apertured diffusion plate 62 having a plurality of perforations 66, 70 about its aperture 64 coaxially mounted between first and second sections 20 and 48; and a burner assembly and feedstock injection means 78 axially mounted through the central apertures 60 and 64 of end plate 58 and diffusion plate 62. In operating the apparatus, oxygen containing gas is introduced through conduit 54 into annular space 76 and through diffusion plate 62 into combustion zone 12 wherein it mixes with combustion fuel introduced through conduit 86 to form a mixture that is ignited. An additional amount of combustion fuel and an excess amount of oxygen-containing gas is introduced into the tunnel burners 32 as a combustible mixture which is ignited and introduced tangentially into the secondary reaction zone 16 where it meets the reaction products from primary zone 14. The products from secondary zone 16 are passed to a quench zone 18 and the quenched products are recovered.
