Abstract

1,247,338. Making combustible gas. POWERGAS CORP. Ltd. 3 Oct., 1968 [13 Oct., 1967], No. 46869/67. Heading C5E. In a process for catalytically steam reforming hydrocarbons to produce a gas containing H 2 , CH 4 and carbon oxides, under elevated temperature and pressure, a stream of hot gas under pressure produced externally of the reforming vessel 20 heats the reactant mixture indirectly through the walls of tubes 22 in the vessel. The hot gas is produced by combustion in a chamber 12, flows down a central tube 21 to outlets 37 into an annular space enclosing one or more rings of catalyst-containing tubes 22, see also Fig. 3 (not shown), and up to outlets 29. The reactants enter at 30, and pass through grids 43 into the tubes 22 which they leave by tubes 38 and outlet 28, which may lead to a secondary reformer (10), see Fig. 1 (not shown). The hot gas, which may comprise 80% air, enters the vessel 20 at e.g. 900‹ to 1000‹ C. at about 150 p.s.i., and the preheated reactants at about 400‹ C. and 400 p.s.i. The hot gas on leaving at 29 preheats air for the reformer (10) at (16) and traverses in turn a gas turbine (8) which drives an air compressor (9) for both reformers, a heat exchanger (3) for hydrocarbon feed, partial combustion (4) and steam raising unit (2), see Fig. I. An air line which by-passes the chamber 12 and vessel 20 contains a control valve (13). The catalyst may be in the annular space, to which the reactants are delivered, the heating gas going to the tubes 22.
