Abstract

285,907. Barrett Co., (Assignees of Osborne, F.). Feb. 26, 1927 [Convention date]. Ascension pipes and hydraulic mains.-The gases and vapours produced by distilling tar by contact with part of the, hot gases from a battery of coke ovens are collected in a short main and mixed with the remaining gases which have been previously cooled to remove the heavy tar constituents in the usual collector main, and the mixture obtained is cooled to recover condensable constituents. A battery of coke ovens 1 of the usual type is provided with a collector main 6 of usual construction and a short collector main 7. The hot gases from the retorts or ovens 5 connected to the short main 7 rise through uptake pipes 3 surrounded by enlarged casings, 4 to pipes 5 communicating with the mains 6, 7 through passages controlled by the valves 8, 9, which may be sprayed with ammonia from a spray 19. The pipe 3 is covered by a removable baffle 11 on which the tar to be distilled is sprayed from a pipe 13. The heavy residues are collected in an annular chamber formed beween the pipe 3 and the casing 4 and are removed through a pipe 14. By manipulation of the valves 8, 9 the retorts delivering to the short main may be selected at will. The main portion of the retort gases is withdrawn through pipes 22, the main 6 where it is cooled, and a collector main 23 to condensers 24, 25 while the tar formed in the main is run to a tank 28, from which it is withdrawn through a dehydrator 29 by a pump 30 to the spray nozzles 12. The enriched gases are led through the short main 7 and cross over main 32 and mixed with the gases in the condensers 24, 25. Specifications 282,367, and 282,826 are referred to.
