Scrubbing and condensing processes.-Tar is distilled by spraying it into contact with hot gases produced from a battery of coal ovens or retorts, and the gaseous products are scrubbed with tar or pitch to give clean gases from which the oils are subsequently condensed, while pitch is obtained from the scrubbing operation. The ascension pipes 6 from part of a battery of coal retorts 5 lead to a short collector main 7 into which tar is sprayed through nozzles 14. The resulting vapours are led to a scrubber 38, where they are sprayed with tar or pitch from nozzles ,31, and then pass to a condenser 38. The tar from the hydraulic main is collected in a tank 13 from which it is pumped to the strays 14 through a preheater 25. Ammonia liquor is decanted through an outlet 23. By introducing tars and pitches of different characteristics through the sprays 31, pitches of different characteristics are precipitated in the scrubber 38 and are removed through a line 35 to a storage tank 36.
