Scrubbing and washing processes.-Pitch and oils are obtained at coal-distillation plants by collecting the gases from the uptake pipes 6 of a number of ovens or retorts and passing them at high temperature through a common collecting main 7 over the surface of a stream of tar continuously circulated from a storage tank 9. The hot gases partially distil the tar. and the vapours produced are carried by the gases through a scrubber 16, where suspended pitch particles are removed by spraying with pitch, or tar to condensers 25 in which clean oils are recovered. The gases are preferably scrubbed with hot pitch of the same composition as the pitch particles suspended therein and part of the pitch is simultaneously distilled and carried over into the condensers where it is condensed with the oils, the residue of the scrubbing medium being circulated with the tar in the collector main. By varying the temperature of the gases and the composition of the circulating tar and scrubbing medium pitches of different melting points are obtained.
