Condensing processes; scrubbers.-Tar, pitch, and tarry oils are distilled by direct contact with hot uncooled coal gases in a still which is also externally heated. The hot gases may be scrubbed before entering the still by direct contact with the residues from the still or with pitch of the same composition as that carried in suspension in the gases. In a coke oven battery provided with the usual up-take pipes 4, the greater part of the gases pass through a pipe 14 and spray head the usual condensers 8, 9. The remainder of the gases are passed through a pipe 14 and spray heat 15 into the tar in a still 13 which is heated externally by flue gas from the plant circulating through a bye pass 42. The tar from the collector main passes through a pipe 11 to a decanter 12 from which it is supplied to the still 13 through a pipe 6<1>. The gases leave the still 13 by a pipe 16 and after passing through condensers 23 are returned to the main stream through pipes 21<1> or 24. The still 13 may be of the horizontal type shown in Fig. 6, or alternatively a vertical still 71, Fig. 9, may be used provided with baffles 73 down which the tar, supplied from a pipe 72, trickles, the hot gases being admitted through a pipe 74 and passing away through a pipe 75. In a further modification, a tower still provided with baffles in its upper portion and spray nozzles in its lower portion may be employed. In a further modification, Fig. 5, the coke oven plant is provided with two collector mains 342, 343 so that the richer gases may be collected separately from the leaner gases, and the gases are passed through a scrubber before introduction into the still.
